Thyroidectomy may be recommended for:
- Increased thyroid function (hyperthyroidism; thyrotoxicosis)
- Decreased thyroid function (hypothyroidism) with enlargement (hypertrophy) of the gland
- Primary cancer of the thyroid
- Enlargement of the thyroid (nontoxic goiter)
