Overview

Thyroidectomy may be recommended for:

  • Increased thyroid function (hyperthyroidism; thyrotoxicosis)
  • Decreased thyroid function (hypothyroidism) with enlargement (hypertrophy) of the gland
  • Primary cancer of the thyroid
  • Enlargement of the thyroid (nontoxic goiter)
