¿Qué es?
La vitamina B6 es necesaria para el correcto funcionamiento de los azúcares, las grasas y las proteínas del cuerpo. También es necesario para el desarrollo del cerebro, los nervios, la piel y muchas otras partes del cuerpo. Se encuentra en cereales, legumbres y huevos, y a menudo se usa con otras vitaminas B en productos del complejo de vitamina B.
Las personas comúnmente usan vitamina B6 para prevenir y tratar la deficiencia de vitamina B6. También se usa para enfermedades cardíacas, síndrome premenstrual (SPM), depresión, náuseas matutinas, enfermedad de Alzheimer, cólicos menstruales, diabetes y muchas otras condiciones, pero no existe una buena evidencia científica que respalde muchos de estos otros usos.

- Un trastorno convulsivo poco común que requiere vitamina B6. Dar a los bebés vitamina B6 por vía intravenosa controla las convulsiones causadas por una condición llamada epilepsia dependiente de piridoxina. Los productos intravenosos solo pueden ser administrados por un proveedor de atención médica.
- Condición en la que el cuerpo produce glóbulos rojos anormales que acumulan hierro (anemia sideroblástica). La ingesta de vitamina B6 es eficaz para tratar un tipo de anemia hereditaria llamada anemia sideroblástica.
- Deficiencia de vitamina B6. La ingesta de vitamina B6 es eficaz para prevenir y tratar la deficiencia de vitamina B6.

- Niveles altos de homocisteína en sangre (hiperhomocisteinemia). La ingesta de vitamina B6, generalmente con ácido fólico, es eficaz para tratar los niveles elevados de homocisteína en la sangre.
Posiblemente eficaz para...
- Altos niveles de una hormona llamada prolactina (hiperprolactinemia) causados por medicamentos antipsicóticos. Tomar vitamina B6 por vía oral reduce los niveles de prolactina en hombres con esta condición.
- Cálculos renales. La ingesta de vitamina B6, sola o junto con magnesio, puede disminuir el riesgo de cálculos renales, especialmente en personas con una enfermedad hereditaria que causa cálculos renales.
- Náuseas matutinas. La ingesta de vitamina B6 mejora los síntomas de náuseas y vómitos leves a moderados durante el embarazo. La vitamina B6 más el medicamento doxilamina se recomienda para aquellos que no mejoran cuando toman vitamina B6 sola.
- Síndrome premenstrual (PMS). La ingesta de vitamina B6 (piridoxina) parece mejorar los síntomas del síndrome premenstrual, incluido el dolor en los senos. Debe usarse la dosis efectiva más baja. Las dosis más altas aumentarán la posibilidad de efectos secundarios y no es probable que aumenten los beneficios.

- Enfermedad de Alzheimer. Tomar suplementos de vitamina B6 por vía oral o ingerir grandes cantidades de vitamina B6 en la dieta no parece reducir el riesgo de enfermedad de Alzheimer.
- Síndrome del túnel carpiano. La ingesta de vitamina B6 no parece reducir los síntomas del síndrome del túnel carpiano.
- Cataratas. La ingesta de vitamina B6, junto con el ácido fólico y la vitamina B12, no previene las cataratas. Incluso podría aumentar el riesgo de tener que extirpar las cataratas.
- Una reacción cutánea adversa causada por el tratamiento con medicamentos contra el cáncer (eritema acral inducido por quimioterapia). La ingesta de vitamina B6 no parece prevenir esta reacción cutánea en personas tratadas con medicamentos contra el cáncer. La vitamina B6 también podría reducir la eficacia de ciertos medicamentos contra el cáncer.
- Crecimientos no cancerosos en el intestino grueso y el recto (adenoma colorrectal). La ingesta de una combinación de ácido fólico, vitamina B6 y vitamina B12 no reduce el riesgo de desarrollar pólipos colorrectales.
- Convulsiones en personas con presión arterial alta durante el embarazo (eclampsia). La ingesta de vitamina B6 o la inyección no parece reducir el riesgo de convulsiones durante el embarazo. Las inyecciones de vitamina B6 solo las puede administrar un proveedor de atención médica.
- Huesos débiles y quebradizos (osteoporosis). La ingesta de una combinación de ácido fólico, vitamina B6 y vitamina B12 no previene las fracturas de huesos en personas con osteoporosis.
- Una complicación del embarazo caracterizada por presión arterial alta y proteínas en la orina (preeclampsia). La ingesta de vitamina B6 o la inyección no parece reducir el riesgo de preeclampsia. Las inyecciones de vitamina B6 solo las puede administrar un proveedor de atención médica.
- Parto prematuro. La ingesta de vitamina B6 o la inyección no parece reducir el riesgo de parto prematuro. Las inyecciones de vitamina B6 solo las puede administrar un proveedor de atención médica.
¿Es seguro?
Advertencias y precauciones especiales:
Embarazo: Es probable que la vitamina B6 sea segura cuando se toma por vía oral de manera adecuada. A veces se usa para controlar las náuseas matutinas, pero solo debe hacerse bajo la supervisión de un proveedor de atención médica. Es posible que tomar dosis altas no sea seguro. Las dosis altas pueden provocar convulsiones en los recién nacidos.Lactancia: Es probable que la vitamina B6 sea segura cuando se toma en dosis de 2 mg por vía oral al día. Evite el uso de cantidades mayores. No hay suficiente información confiable para saber si tomar dosis más altas de vitamina B6 es seguro durante la lactancia.
Colocación de stent posquirúrgico: Evite el uso de una combinación de vitamina B6, ácido fólico y vitamina B12 después de recibir un stent coronario. Esta combinación puede aumentar el riesgo de estrechamiento de los vasos sanguíneos.
Cirugía de adelgazamiento: Las personas que se han sometido a una cirugía para bajar de peso no necesitan tomar un suplemento de vitamina B6. Tomar demasiado podría aumentar la posibilidad de efectos secundarios como náuseas, vómitos y coloración de la piel.
¿Existen interacciones con medicamentos?
- Fenitoína (Dilantin)
- La vitamina B6 podría aumentar la rapidez con que el cuerpo descompone la fenitoína. La ingesta de vitamina B6 junto con fenitoína podría disminuir los efectos de la fenitoína y aumentar el riesgo de convulsiones. No tome grandes dosis de vitamina B6 si está tomando fenitoína.
- Amiodarona (Cordarone)
- La amiodarona puede aumentar la sensibilidad a la luz solar. La ingesta de vitamina B6 junto con amiodarona podría aumentar las posibilidades de sufrir quemaduras solares, ampollas o erupciones en las áreas de la piel expuestas a la luz solar. Asegúrese de usar bloqueador solar y ropa protectora cuando pase tiempo bajo el sol.
- Fenobarbital (luminal)
- La vitamina B6 podría aumentar la rapidez con que el cuerpo descompone el fenobarbital. Esto podría disminuir los efectos del fenobarbital.
- Medicamentos para la presión arterial alta (medicamentos antihipertensivos)
- La vitamina B6 podría reducir la presión arterial. Tomar dosis altas de vitamina B6 junto con medicamentos que reducen la presión arterial puede hacer que la presión arterial baje demasiado. Controle su presión arterial de cerca.
- Levodopa
- La vitamina B6 puede aumentar la rapidez con que el cuerpo se descompone y elimina la levodopa. Pero esto solo es un problema si está tomando levodopa sola. La mayoría de las personas toman levodopa junto con carbidopa. Carbidopa evita que ocurra esta interacción. Si está tomando levodopa sin carbidopa, no tome vitamina B6.

- Hierbas y suplementos que pueden reducir la presión arterial
- La vitamina B6 podría reducir la presión arterial. Tomarlo con otros suplementos que tienen el mismo efecto puede hacer que la presión arterial baje demasiado. Ejemplos de suplementos con este efecto incluyen andrographis, péptidos de caseína, L-arginina, niacina y ortiga.
