¿Qué es?
Las bacterias "buenas" como B. lactis pueden ayudar a descomponer los alimentos, absorber los nutrientes y combatir los organismos "malos" que pueden causar enfermedades. B. lactis es una subespecie de B. animalis. Se encuentra en el intestino humano y se usa en suplementos probióticos.
Las personas usan B. lactis para el llanto excesivo en bebés (cólicos), estreñimiento, síndrome del intestino irritable (SII) e infecciones del tracto respiratorio. También se usa para las caries dentales, la fiebre del heno, la diarrea y muchas otras condiciones, pero no existe una buena evidencia científica que respalde muchos de estos usos. Tampoco hay buena evidencia para apoyar el uso de B. lactis para COVID-19.
Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis a veces aparece como Bifidobacterium lactis (o B. lactis) en las etiquetas de los productos. No confunda B. lactis con otros probióticos o con productos alimenticios fermentados como leche fermentada, kéfir o yogur. Estos no son lo mismo.

- Llanto excesivo en bebés (cólicos). Administrar a los bebés B. lactis por vía oral parece ayudar a reducir el llanto causado por los cólicos.
- Estreñimiento. Tomar B. lactis por vía oral parece ayudar a aliviar el estreñimiento.
- Un trastorno prolongado del intestino grueso que causa dolor de estómago (síndrome del intestino irritable o SII). Tomar B. lactis por vía oral parece ayudar a aliviar los síntomas del SII. Pero no está claro si tomarlo junto con otros probióticos ayuda.
- Infección de las vías respiratorias. Tomar B. lactis por vía oral podría ayudar a prevenir infecciones de las vías respiratorias, como el resfriado común, en personas sanas. Pero puede que no parezca ayudar a las personas que tienen otros problemas de salud graves.

- Caries. Tomar B. lactis por vía oral no parece prevenir las caries en los niños pequeños.

Advertencias y precauciones especiales:
Embarazo y lactancia: No hay suficiente información confiable para saber si es seguro usar B. lactis durante el embarazo o la lactancia. Manténgase en el lado seguro y evite su uso.Niños: B. lactis probablemente sea segura para la mayoría de los niños cuando se toma por vía oral durante un máximo de 8 meses. Puede causar diarrea en algunos niños. Sin embargo, no hay suficiente información confiable para saber si B. lactis es segura para bebés prematuros muy pequeños.
Sistema inmunitario debilitado: Algunos probióticos han causado infecciones en la sangre en un pequeño número de personas con sistemas inmunitarios debilitados. Si tiene un sistema inmunitario debilitado, hable con su proveedor de atención médica antes de tomar B. lactis.
