El sulfato de condroitina es uno de los componentes básicos del cartílago. En la osteoartritis, el cartílago de las articulaciones se rompe. La ingesta de sulfato de condroitina podría retrasar esta degradación. Por lo general, se fabrica a partir de fuentes animales, como cartílago de tiburón y vaca. También se puede hacer en un laboratorio.
El sulfato de condroitina se usa para la osteoartritis y las cataratas. A menudo se usa junto con otros ingredientes, como ascorbato de manganeso, ácido hialurónico, péptidos de colágeno o glucosamina. El sulfato de condroitina también se usa para muchas otras afecciones, pero no existe una buena evidencia científica que respalde estos usos.

- Cataratas. La FDA aprobó una solución inyectable que contiene condroitín sulfato e hialuronato de sodio para proteger el ojo durante la cirugía de cataratas. No está claro si usarlo en una forma diferente ayudará.
- Osteoartitis. La ingesta de sulfato de condroitina parece aliviar el dolor de la osteoartritis y mejorar la función. Los productos de alta calidad de grado farmacéutico han mostrado los mayores beneficios. Chondrosulf (IBSA Institut Biochimique SA), Chondrosan (Bioiberica, S.A.) y Structrum (Laboratoires Pierre Fabre) son ejemplos de estos productos.
¿Es seguro?
Cuando se coloca en el ojo: El sulfato de condroitina es posiblemente seguro cuando se usa junto con otros ingredientes en una gota para los ojos.
Advertencias y precauciones especiales:
Embarazo y lactancia: No hay suficiente información confiable para saber si el sulfato de condroitina es seguro de usar durante el embarazo o la lactancia. Manténgase en el lado seguro y evite su uso.Asma: Existe cierta preocupación de que el sulfato de condroitina pueda empeorar el asma. Si tiene asma, use el sulfato de condroitina con precaución.
Cáncer de próstata: La investigación preliminar sugiere que la condroitina podría causar la propagación o la recurrencia del cáncer de próstata. Este efecto no se ha demostrado con suplementos de sulfato de condroitina. Sin embargo, hasta que se sepa más, no tome condroitín sulfato si tiene cáncer de próstata o tiene un alto riesgo de desarrollarlo (tiene un hermano o un padre con cáncer de próstata).
¿Existen interacciones con medicamentos?
- Warfarina (Coumadin)
- La warfarina se usa para retardar la coagulación de la sangre. Hay varios informes que muestran que tomar condroitina con glucosamina aumenta los efectos de la warfarina. Esto puede causar hematomas y sangrado que pueden ser graves. No tome condroitina si está tomando warfarina.
¿Existen interacciones con hierbas y suplementos?
- Glucosamina
- Tomar sulfato de condroitina junto con clorhidrato de glucosamina podría reducir los niveles de glucosamina en la sangre. Pero no está claro si esto cambiará los efectos del clorhidrato de glucosamina. Tampoco está claro si esta interacción ocurre con otras formas de glucosamina, como el sulfato de glucosamina.

¿Como se usa normalmente?
Existe la preocupación de que algunos productos de sulfato de condroitina no estén etiquetados con precisión.
