El salvado de avena y la avena integral se utilizan para las enfermedades cardíacas, el colesterol alto y la diabetes. También se usan para la presión arterial alta, el cáncer, la piel seca y muchas otras condiciones, pero no existe una buena evidencia científica que respalde estos otros usos.

- Enfermedad del corazón. La avena contiene fibra. Consumir una dieta rica en fibra, como 3.6 gramos de avena al día, reduce el riesgo de enfermedad cardíaca.
- Colesterol alto. Comer avena, salvado de avena y otras fibras solubles puede reducir un poco el colesterol total y de lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDL o "malo") cuando se consume como parte de una dieta baja en grasas saturadas.

Embarazo y lactancia: El salvado de avena y la avena integral probablemente sean seguros cuando se consumen en los alimentos durante el embarazo y la lactancia.Enfermedad celíaca: Las personas con enfermedad celíaca no deben comer gluten. A muchas personas con enfermedad celíaca se les dice que eviten comer avena porque podrían estar contaminadas con trigo, centeno o cebada, que contienen gluten.
