Benzocaine and Menthol Topical

pronounced as (ben′ zoe kane)(men′ thol)

Why is this medication prescribed?

Benzocaine and menthol topical is used to relieve pain and itching on the skin. Benzocaine and menthol are in a class of medications called topical analgesics. It works by blocking pain signals to the brain from an area of skin.

How should this medicine be used?

Benzocaine and menthol comes as a spray liquid to apply to the skin. Apply up to 3 or 4 times a day or as directed by your doctor.

Stop using benzocaine and menthol spray and contact your doctor if your condition gets worse, if your symptoms continue for more than 7 days, or if your symptoms get better and then return in a few days.

Use benzocaine and menthol exactly as directed. Do not use more or less of it or take it more often than indicated on the label or prescribed by your doctor.

Avoid contact with your eyes.

Avoid contact with leather, fabric, and upholstery to prevent possible staining or discoloration.

Do not use near heat, fire, or an open flame or while smoking.

To use the spray, follow these steps:

  1. Hold the can 6 to 12 inches from the affected area.
  2. Direct the nozzle towards the area of the skin and press the button to spray.
  3. Do not spray on your face or mouth. If applying to the face, spray the liquid in the palm of your hand and gently apply to your face.

What special precautions should I follow?

Before using benzocaine and menthol,

  • tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to this medication, any part of this medication, or any other medications, foods or substances. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about the allergy and what symptoms you had.
  • tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take.
  • tell your doctor if you have or have ever had any medical conditions.
  • tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while using benzocaine and menthol, call your doctor.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, continue your normal diet.

What should I do if I forget a dose?

This medication is usually applied as needed. If your doctor has told you to use benzocaine and menthol regularly, use the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed one.

What side effects can this medication cause?

If you experience any of these symptoms, stop using benzocaine and menthol and call your doctor:

  • itching, rash, irritation

Benzocaine and menthol may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.

What should I know about storage and disposal of this medication?

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature. Do not store the spray container near a heat source or an open flame. Do not puncture the container and do not dispose of it in an incinerator or fire.

Dispose of unneeded medications in a way so that pets, children, and other people cannot take them. Do not flush this medication down the toilet. Use a medicine take-back program. In case of emergency/overdose

If someone swallows benzocaine and menthol, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Keep all appointments with your doctor.

Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about benzocaine and menthol.

Keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medicines, vitamins, minerals, and dietary supplements you are taking. Bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to the hospital. You should carry the list with you in case of emergencies.
