El eleutero se considera a menudo un adaptógeno. Los adaptógenos son una clase de sustancias que se cree que estimulan la resistencia del cuerpo a los factores estresantes físicos, ambientales y emocionales. Eleutero contiene muchas sustancias químicas que afectan el cerebro, el sistema inmunológico y ciertas hormonas.
Las personas usan eleutero para el herpes genital, la diabetes, el rendimiento deportivo, las habilidades de memoria y pensamiento, el resfriado común y muchas otras condiciones, pero no existe una buena evidencia científica que respalde la mayoría de estos usos.
No confunda el eleutero con otras hierbas llamadas "ginseng", como el ginseng americano, el cohosh azul, el canaigre, el codonopsis, el panax ginseng y el panax notoginseng. Estos no son lo mismo.

Advertencias y precauciones especiales:
Embarazo y lactancia: No hay suficiente información confiable para saber si eleutero es seguro de usar durante el embarazo o la lactancia. Manténgase en el lado seguro y evite su uso.Niños: Eleutero es posiblemente seguro en adolescentes (de 12 a 17 años) cuando se toma por vía oral hasta por 6 semanas. No hay suficiente información confiable para saber si es seguro usarlo a largo plazo o en niños pequeños.
Condiciones cardíacas: Eleutero puede causar latidos cardíacos fuertes, latidos cardíacos irregulares o presión arterial alta en personas que tienen trastornos cardíacos. Si tiene una condición cardíaca, use eleutero solo bajo la supervisión de un proveedor de atención médica.
Condiciones sensibles a las hormonas como cáncer de seno, cáncer de útero, cáncer de ovario, endometriosis o fibromas uterinos: Eleutero podría actuar como estrógeno. Si tiene alguna condición que podría empeorar por la exposición al estrógeno, no use eleutero.

- Digoxina (Lanoxin)
- Existe cierta preocupación de que el eleutero pueda aumentar los niveles de digoxina. Esto podría aumentar los efectos y los efectos secundarios de la digoxina. Si está tomando digoxina, hable con un proveedor de atención médica antes de tomar eleutero.

- Eleutero podría reducir los niveles de azúcar en sangre. La ingesta de eleutero junto con medicamentos para la diabetes puede hacer que el azúcar en sangre baje demasiado. Controle de cerca su nivel de azúcar en sangre.
- Medicamentos que disminuyen el sistema inmunológico (inmunosupresores)

- Eleutero podría reducir el azúcar en sangre. Tomarlo con otros suplementos con efectos similares podría reducir demasiado el azúcar en sangre. Ejemplos de suplementos con este efecto incluyen aloe, melón amargo, canela casia, cromo y nopal.
- Hierbas y suplementos que pueden retardar la coagulación sanguínea
- Eleutero podría retardar la coagulación sanguínea y aumentar el riesgo de hemorragia. Tomarlo con otros suplementos con efectos similares podría aumentar el riesgo de hemorragia en algunas personas. Ejemplos de suplementos con este efecto incluyen ajo, jengibre, ginkgo, natokinasa y Panax ginseng.
